  • I feed all my dogs raw meat, they are doing really good. I’ve been feeding them raw meat for years, ever since I was a kid. Two local grocery stores in my town give away their “scraps” every afternoon. I go ask for them at around 3:00, and sometimes they say that someone already took them, but most of the time, one of the butchers picks up the heavy, heavy box and puts it in my cart. I get a large assortment of beef, chicken, pork, and sometimes fish. All of my dogs are 100% healthy.
I had a wolf hybrid named Jay who lived to be 16 years old (died recently) He lived on a raw diet.

  • I feed my dogs a primarily raw food diet (kibble for treats). They’re doing great, no tooth tartar, glossy coats… and winning at the shows.

I’ve heard diabetic dogs do well on BARF, but I’ve never had one. You may want to look into joining a Yahoo group for BARF… and ask about feeding pancreas to your diabetic dog…. I’ve heard that helps.

  • I feed a raw prey model diet… Like barf, but without all the veggies and supplements. It is easy, simple, cheap, and couldn’t have healthier dogs if I tried.

There are quite a few people on the rawfeeding group at yahoo who have diabetic dogs… This group is raw prey model diet…

Why don’t you join and ask them for some info:

It is hard to know what people mean now that accepted terms have become registered trademarks!! I feed my dog and cats Bones and Raw Food but I don’t use the commercialised BARF method. I believe that dogs are carnivores and need to be feed meat and bones not ground patties with vegetables, cheese and supplements

My pets eat raw meat, raw meaty edible bones, offal and a few table scraps. I use the model recommended by Dr Tom Lonsdale in his Raw Meaty Bones and Work Wonders books. The link is to his feeding guide.

    Good luck!

  • If the BARF diet is bones and raw meat then I would discourage you from feeding it to a diabetic dog. If your dog is diabetic the best option is Science Diet’s diabetic diet or Purina dco to be synergistic with your insulin or diabetic therapy. I would be concerned about the cause of diabetes and understand a diabetic dog does not have a lot of pancreas to spare and if he gets pancreatitis or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency from that diet he will be harder to control in terms of diabetes and could develop g. i. problems as well.

  • I can’t tell you about how a diabetic dog will do on the BARF diet..
My dog is doing well..loves his food and looks healthier since I switched..
I would mention that Kibble and raw meat should not be fed together..perhaps if you feed raw in the morning and kibble at night? But the two foods are digested at completely different rates and, because the kibble takes so much longer to digest, the raw meat is left too long in the dogs intestines which is when feeding raw can become a problem. I had my dog on Innova and then added cooked loafs (still meat but because they are cooked can be mixed in with the kibble..try Healthy Paws)
    Good luck!
