All Baking Powders Aren't The Same

Used as a leavening agent, baking powder is great for making foods like muffins, cookies and quick breads rise. People need to know some brands have healthier ingredients than others do.

All types of baking powders are made with baking soda, a starch and an acid.

Something like calcium acid phosphate, cream of tartar, or sodium aluminum sulphate is usually used as the acid. When the baking powder is combined with a liquid, whatever type of acid is in it will react with the baking soda. This causes the release of carbon dioxide gas, which in turn causes the batter or dough to rise.

To prevent the baking powder from absorbing moisture, starch is added. Most often this takes the form of cornstarch or flour. It will help keep the baking powder to stay dry until you’re ready to use it.

That sounds pretty simple. So what’s the problem?

Well, sodium aluminum sulphate is the problem. First off, many medical sources connect aluminum with health problems such as Alzheimer’s disease. The reason is because aluminum is a persistent neurotoxin, and has a tendency to accumulate in the brain and bones.

Although aluminum is considerably less toxic than mercury, arsenic or lead, it is much more common in the environment making it more likely to be ingested.

What could the solution be?

It’s a problem to avoid all the aluminum in our environment, but why use it in our foods? In regards to baking powder, it’s easy to avoid. How?

All you need to do to solve the aluminum problem is to buy a product that uses a different sort of acid, such as monocalcium phosphate.

Many grocery stores carry Rumford’s baking powder, which is aluminum free. Bob’s Red Mill also carries an aluminum free type. (If you reside in Canada, look for Magic Baking Powder.) There are various brands available – just be sure to check the ingredients to see there is no aluminum in whatever brand you buy.

There just isn’t any point in continuing to ingest aluminum when it’s so easy to change your brand of baking powder and avoid it.

Many people think that it is expensive to buy healthy food. To some extent, this is of course true.

How much time does it take to put some peas in a bowl and pour over water? 2 minutes.
How much time does it take to put the beans, canned tomatoes, spices, water, onion and some vegetables in a pan and place them in the oven? 10 minutes.
You can even use a slow cooker and skip the soaking.

Try different recipes. Pots, salads, soups, chilli, hummus or burgers. Make dishes with inspiration from India, Mexico, Brazil.

A bit of meat or ham can be used as a spice but it is not the main, belly filling ingredient, like in a pea soup.

For the climate. Meat production adds to global warming; 3 times more fossil fuels are needed to produce a meat-centered-diet versus a meat-free-diet.

Emergency pack. Keep an emergency can of your favorite beans at home at all times.

How to Lose That Extra Weight

Let’s face it. There are a lot of different approaches out there to losing that extra weight. Fad diets, diet pills, pre-packaged dietary menus, and the list goes on and on. The diet industry is a multi-billion dollar business, has been for quite a while, and will continue to grow in the future. It seems as though every time we turn around, there’s a new pill, or “super “diet that guarantees to be the best, and work for everyone. Well, Truth is; It WONT work for everyone.

I’m not saying that these methods don’t work at all. I’m sure that you know of someone that has lost weight by taking diet pills, or following fad diets and such. Truth be told; A few years ago, I lost weight (about 5lbs) in one week experimenting with the Atkins diet. Unfortunately, I gained it all back in a short period of time. I simply could not follow the strict regimen of “low-crab” dieting. I’m certain you can offer a similar experience, either with yourself, or someone you know.

As with most people that are overweight, It mainly (not always) has to do with two factors. The first factor is poor eating habits (diet), and the second is lack of exercise. Taking immediate control over these two factors, (and that would mean as soon as possible) is the first and best step in gaining control of your weight management. Having a set program (routine) and a good sound nutrition plan in place will have you well on your way to a fantastic, new you. The benefits will be both visual and most importantly, just plain better for your health.

Watching my health has always been important to me. I am in my early forties and have been living a “healthy lifestyle” for about 20 years. Please, (Let me give you my “definition” of healthy). DIET & EXERCISE. Plain and simple. DIET & EXERCISE. Eating good healthy balanced meals (smaller portions and more frequently), combined with a good exercise routine is the key to safely losing the weight, and keeping it off. You will feel this inclination to improve other areas of your life, set new goals and push to achieve them. “MARK MY WORD”, because these things do happen. You will find it just becomes a positive change in every aspect of your life.
